Isn't Nelson beautiful!

Can anyone work out where I am?  This is a photo from the top.  What is the building to my right?

Going up the hill was hard work but coming down was treacherous!  I fell over and landed on my backside ... grazing my hands and legs.  As is always the way there happened to be some mountain bikers walking up, which made it even more embarrassing.  Ah well, at least I only fell over once!

Friday Fun Day!

Welcome to Fun Day Friday.  I woke up today feeling
quite different … quirky one might say.
Unlike Mrs DG it wasn’t a hair problem it was more
of a face transformation.  I think today is going to be
one of those days … let’s have some fun together!

Get Moving!

Click on the link below for some ideas to get you moving.  Grab a dice and go for it!

4 letters – 2 points
5 letters – 5 points
6 letters – 6 points
7 letters+ – 10 points
Cartoon Magic
Get Creative

Ever wanted to be able to draw cartoons?  I know I have, what a cool skill to have.

Meet Pete McKee (above) he’s an amazing cartoon artist and he’s going to take you through some cartoon workshops today.

Your challenge today is to try and create a cartoon YOU.
AND/OR

You will need a hot glue gun for this.  Or you could try PVA glue if you have it but it would need time to dry.  Vivid would look great too. Below are my attempts.  I used food colouring (I only had pink, yellow, blue colours so I mixed them to make orange and green). If you didn't have food dye you could experiment with things from the pantry, jam and water or make browns using the ingredients from our bunny art. (These are my attempts below).

Quirky Quiz Time

Hey, hey, hey it’s SPARKS writing day!

Today I am challenging you to write a Quirky Quiz for the class.
(This is the writing activity for today and tomorrow).

I have written one for you and put it on a google doc (see the link below).  Can you work out my answers?

Be ready to share a question at our Zoom catch up tomorrow.

Your job is to choose a letter and write your own ‘Quirky Quiz.’  Follow the same format as mine.  I think the easiest way is to copy and paste my one underneath, then delete my words and replace them with your own.

By the end of this activity we should have lots of quizzes on the same Google Doc.  Remember if you make a mistake and delete something, don’t panic, just type command z and it will reappear.

Your challenge today is to use a challenging word in your quiz that will make people think, e.g. mantelpiece.

Maths Challenge

When I was out walking I saw these letter boxes and thought they might make a cool challenge.

1.  Are these numbers odd or even?  How do you know?

2. What is the total if you added all these numbers together?  What strategy are you using?  I wonder if there is a quicker way of doing it?

3.  What is the total of all these numbers if you treated them as single numbers
( 3,7,5,3,7,7,3,7,9)  Are there combinations of numbers that make it easier for adding?

EXTRA FOR EXPERTS
4. What is the smallest number you can make using + or - ? e.g. 375+377-379=

Zoom Catch Up!

I wonder whose class this is?

Please come to our Zoom catch up tomorrow.  It will be great hearing about what you’ve been up to this week.

Dantae's Recipe for How to Survive in a Bubble

Hi everyone back at school today:) I just wanted to share Dantae's writing.  I especially liked his descriptions  'wrap myself up in my big fluffy blanket', 'my tummy grumbles' and 'search the pantry'.

Ingredients

Xbox
Tv
Water
Breakfast
Lunch
Diner
Food
A cat
Family members
Trampoline
warks
Big fluffy blanket
Hand Sanitiser

Method

I roll out of bed and wrap myself up in my big fluffy blanket and make my way to the lounge.
I go on the couch and my cat comes on me and  sometimes she snoozes on me.
My tummy grumbles, time for breakfast .
I go to the kitchen and search the pantry and get some breakfast.
I eat breakfast, chillout for a bit and get  ready for the day.
Free play to 10.30 then chores to 11 o'clock  then online learning to 12 o’clock, then lunch  time and then maybe go for  a walk
Wednesday is device night. Device time starts at 6 o’clock after diner and so is Friday, Saturday and Sunday unless it is a holiday then I might be able to play on my devices at different times.

Term 2 -  Tuesday 27 April
Hi everyone, Alert Level 3 now - woo hoo:)  So that means I am back at school.  That doesn't mean you stop your online learning.  Mrs Harpur will work with you at the end of the week and I will focus on Monday - Wednesday.  So I'll still be involved in your learning and I still want you to keep in touch.  There may be longer gaps between when I email back or post your sharing but it will still happen.  Your sharing makes all this online learning worthwhile:)

Nikau's News Update

Hi everyone, it was fun catching up today.  Fleur and I could not believe how quiet you all were.  Thanks for the feedback for next week -  more challenging maths, some spelling activities and more art - we are on to it!   I loved Holly's presentation (see below) summarising her activities during Lockdown Day 29 so much, I decided to use the same way to present some of our photos.  Below is my first attempt.

I have asked Holly to teach us how to make the origami
butterflies when we are back together again.

Here we have an ANZAC theme with Kaden and Caitlyn's
poppies and Caitlyn making ANZAC biscuits.

Thursday 23 April 2020

Hi everyone!

Next week I'm going to give you a guided tour around my home ... may need to tidy!!

Friday Fun Day - ANZAC Day Bingo Board

Hi team, hoping your week has gone well.   I love seeing all the learning you’ve been doing, it makes me miss you even more than I already do!
Today’s theme is going to be around ANZAC day, which is tomorrow.  There are a whole lot of creative tasks on this BINGO board.  I’m giving you the option to choose the ones that you’re interested in.
I really like the, 'building a bunker,' activity ... now that would be fun!  Also who doesn't like Anzac biscuits?  You could make the mixture and halve it.  Try adding something to the recipe and create something new, e.g. raisins or cinnamon.  Then you could test it on family members and see what they think.

Did you work out what I was cooking from the ingredients yesterday?  If you thought it was cinnamon rolls you were correct.  If you want the recipe message me and I’ll send it through.  They were delicious!

Gratefulness Bag

Time to add to our gratefulness/memory bag … (like we did last week)

What’s been your favourite memory this week?
What are you grateful for?
What is something you wish you could have done this week but couldn’t because you’ve had to stay at home?

These are mine…
My family and I normally go to an ANZAC Day service so I wish I could be going to one this on Saturday.  I’m very grateful for all the soldiers who went to war and fought on my behalf.  This week I’ve been doing a lot of garden maintenance around my home, this makes me happy because it all looks so much tidier.

Write these on a piece of paper and remember to add your symbol to the front so we know it’s yours (mine’s a flower can you remember yours?)

My tree is getting quite full!

More Lockdown Learning

Hi everyone, thanks again for the wonderful photos, movies and emails showing examples of your lockdown learning.  Good to see evidence of exercise too.  Here is a selection of some recent sharing.  Remember I will send details of our Zoom Meeting tomorrow (Meeting is at 3.00 BUT sending link to parent emails now).

Learning can be many things

Rebecca has been making things
out of loom bands.

James B created this dog
starting with just a dot.

Hi from Mrs DG

Hi everyone, fourth video attempt again!!  The first was too long and the other two ended up with me making weird faces at the end.  Very scary!  Then when I finished this one I forgot to tell you all how proud I am.  You have been helping at home,  keeping in touch and engaged in lots of different types of learning.  For Thursday, as I said in the video, I want you to really focus on a piece of writing.  There are the Sparks writing ideas or you could revisit ideas in other posts.  Here is Tahlia's poem from Wednesday.

Impressive, isn't it?  For other activities today I want you to prepare for a Zoom Meeting on Friday @ 3.00.  Details will be sent to your gmail on Friday early afternoon.  During the meeting you need to share one positive thing about being in Alert Level 4 and one thing you are missing.  Finally for the rest of today, choose any activity from a previous post or under the Useful Websites section.  I have been offering a lot of options so take some time out today to revisit previous days and do something different or something that you liked a lot.  SEE YOU FRIDAY:) PS I haven't tried a covid haircut yet!

Thursday ... SPARKS WRITING

Sparks Writing

Hey, hey, hey it’s SPARKS writing day!  As usual you are welcome to write about whatever interests you in whatever genre that suits your writing.

Your challenge today is to use strong verbs.  Verbs are ‘doing/action’ words.  Here’s just a few I found.  You could try using some of these.  If you're not sure what they mean look them up in the dictionary.

IDEAS FOR SPARKS …
If you’re lacking for ideas today you might like to have a go at this…

Upstart Magazine Competition
I’m not sure where you are at with this but you might try starting/finishing one of these from last week.  (See last weeks blog entry).
Or

Let’s Get Baking
I’ve been really amazed at your fabulous cooking skills (Mrs DG what a cake!).  Lots of people are sharing their recipes online at the moment.

What is this?
Below is a photo of some ingredients. Can you guess what you think I might be making?  I’ll share the recipe and photo of my success …. or failure on Friday!

Today you could have a go at writing your own recipe.  This might be a recipe for other people to try or it could be a recipe on, 'How to survive living in a 'bubble.’

It would be great to have a recipe from everyone, we could make our own Nikau cook book.  Write it onto a Google Doc and share it with me.

Tuesday 21 April 2020

Warm Wishes for Wednesday

Hi everyone, you are going so well with your online learning.  I am really proud.  I will post a video soon.
Maths:
Times tables practice:
Spend time practising the 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 10x tables during the next few days.  You can do this using Studyladder (there are heaps of activities), and/or by clicking on the Multiplication Facts – Test Yourself link and/or by playing the game below:
Maths version of Rock, Paper, Scissors
Two players sit opposite each other and like the game Rock, Scissors, Paper they hold closed fists and count together to 3. Then they open their hands and show a number of fingers. The first person to correctly multiply the number of fingers each person is showing wins a point. Make sure numbers over 5 are displayed using all the fingers on one hand and some from the other hand. Start with one hand each first, for a while.

Exercise:
Revisit the What’s your name? workout.  Today’s words are:
·      Lockdown
·      Social Distance
·      Family Bubble
·      Online learning
Aim to work through two of these words.

And/or:
Next week we are introducing some walking or running training for the school cross country.  Silone has set up a competition, not just for the fastest or who runs the furthest but for reasons like getting others in your bubble involved and for meeting personal challenges.  More details to come.  So in the meanwhile aim to work out for 5 - 6 minutes non-stop (this could be 2 Jump Jam songs, a brisk family walk or a bike ride – you choose)
Be Creative:
Watch the flip book link under Useful Websites and create a wordless story of your own or you could try to capture action like a car moving or a ball bouncing.

Read or write:
Complete the Quirky Quiz #3 created by Mrs Alexander.  Link under Useful Websites.  You will need to record these on a piece of paper or on another doc.  Feel free to send to me or check the answers with family members.
And/or…
Listen to the Peter Bland’s poem Listening under Useful Websites and have a go at creating a similar poem of your own by following Peter Bland’s model and filling in the gaps of the second model (see below).  You need to be thinking about strong verbs and consider the range of sounds you could possibly hear.  I would love to read and publish your poems
